Dr Max Mongelli says that whatever you do during your pregnancy will have an impact on your child’s brain in the womb as well as after the birth and also in growing years. Let’s see here some of the tips to make your baby smarter. First of all, the mothers should take a healthy diet such as Omega 3 fatty acids which is found in fish, leafy vegetables for iron, and nuts like walnuts which is ideal for the growth of the brain and almonds for protein, energy and niacin. Secondly, it is very important to stay active and fit during pregnancy. Simple exercises will help in the development of the brain of your baby. Going for a brisk walk regularly also helps. It is most important that you pique the attention of your baby in the womb. You can listen to soothing music, nursery rhymes or even sing for your baby. You can talk to the baby and the baby will respond even though it may not understand what you are saying. All these calms your baby’s mind and increases concentration. You can even rub your belly gently which will make the baby to stimulate. It is essential during pregnancy to check your thyroid level as any change in it will have a bad impact on the baby. Having a balanced diet which includes iodised salt, yoghurt, etc. will help in getting the necessary iodine. As we are aware, it is essential to have extra nourishment during pregnancy and whatever supplements that are prescribed by your doctor should not be avoided. Breastfeeding your baby for the first six month is imperative as it provides the necessary nourishment needed for the development of the brain. You should avoid tobacco and alcohol during pregnancy as it may lead to still born baby or premature delivery which will result in poor mental and physical health of the baby. You should also maintain a fairly reasonable body weight so that it avoids premature delivery which causes mental ailments. During pregnancy it is ideal to stay under the sun in the early morning as it is the rich source of Vitamin D which is needed for the healthy development of the bones. In general, it is ideal for the pregnant woman to stay calm and stress free else it will affect the mental health of the baby in the womb. Max Mongelli advises for the pregnant women to stay happy and healthy to have intelligent and smart baby.

During the first trimester of pregnancy, it is advisable to take folic acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin A and protein in sufficient quantities. Dr Max Mongelli suggests for 3-4 servings of fruits, 3-5 servings of vegetables, 3 servings of dairy products, 2-3 servings of protein and 3 servings of whole grains. The doctor might also prescribe for supplements which will provide the sufficient amount of calcium, riboflavin, thiamine, magnesium, Vitamin A, potassium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, etc. All these are essential for the growth of the baby. Normally, a pregnant woman should take 300 calories in addition to their regular intake of food. Spinach, rich in folic acid, broccoli rich in iron, green peas, red, yellow and green bell peppers, sweet potatoes are all should be taken during the first trimester of pregnancy. Citrus fruits are ideal during first trimester but including other fruits are essential as well. Apart from, having fruits and vegetables fibres and fluids should also be taken in sufficient quantities. Eating of fibre rich food helps in maintaining the bowel movement. So it is ideal to have whole grain breads, pasta, cereals etc. which are rich in fibre. The pregnant mother also needs to have sufficient amount of calcium. Apart from drinking milk, it is ideal to take yoghurt, cheese, etc. In the case of non-vegetarian foods, eggs, soup, lean meats, fish are ideal to take but should avoid deep sea fishes. When you take poultry food, you should ensure that it is properly cooked not only for the sake of digestion but also for protecting against any disease that might arise from them. Max Mongelli also suggests taking of whole grains and proteins. Some of the pregnant woman might suffer from morning sickness. Hence, it is essential for them to have stomach-friendly food.
